We had this HRV installed in our home

We’ve had problems with condensation on our windows for years. Then we decided to have an indoor air quality assessment and when we had constant headaches. The result of the assessment was that our carbon dioxide (CO2) levels in our home were more than 3x normal (well over 1600 ppm. normal is 500 or so).

The simple answer was to install an HRV. The Canadian and Ontario governments even offered a rebate of $750 for doing so.

Two black "Earth Maker" Backyard Composters

Backyard Composters - No Snow on Top.

To reduce our kitchen waste, and to take the City of Waterloo up on it’s offer of free stuff, we installed two backyard composters. We put almost all food and yard waste in these. The only exception is meat and bones. We throw in egg shells, mouldy bread, carrot peels, apple cores, leftover pureed baby food — the works.

Remember that the recycling motto (“Reduce, Reuse, Recycle!”) is a list of best to worst options and not a set of equivalent choices. Basically reduce your waste overall (even if it’s recyclable), reuse what you can and recycle only as a last resort.

One of our major changes involved signing up for Bullfrog Power’s service. This went a long way towards greening our home with one simple signup form and a few extra dollars a month. Basically, Bullfrog injects100% green and renewable electricity into the grid for every fraction of a kilowatt hour we use.

Let’s start with the most obvious one. We couldn’t really claim an environmental conscience for our family if the hosting of this blog spewed forth an hourly pile of carbon, especially when no one was visiting yet.
